Fulham’s Roy Hodgson gave guests a unique and personal insight into what it takes to succeed in one of the most high pressure and high profile management roles there is. The theme of the evening – “winning against the odds” – was certainly apt considering Fulham’s recent unexpected 2-0 victory over Premier League leaders Manchester United. The odds, incidentally, were 15-1 against Hodgson’s side. If the Fulham manager was still basking in the glory, however, he was giving nothing away. Fielding questions from host John Inverdale and an audience of some 70 invited business leaders, Hodgson spoke as a man with enough experience of management, both in England and internationally, to take the highs and lows of the business on the chin. The manager revealed insights into everything from team strategy and half-time pep-talks to the complex and often challenging relationships that exist between the manager and the media, his team and the board. Guests also got a sneak preview of The Manager, a new publication in association with the LMA. This – like future Business Club events – will provide exclusive access to some of the most successful leaders in football and business, and bring management issues to life. For any leader trying to get the best out of their team, it promises to be an essential read.
