Mark Prisk urges ministers to become interns

Michelmersh Brick and Tile Company is a Hampshire-based producer of stock bricks and handmade clay roof tiles, employing 80 people.

Enterprise Minister Mark Prisk has worked with five separate businesses, all in different markets, to gain an understanding of the daily issues facing SMEs: “I’ve been hugely impressed by the dedication, ingenuity and enthusiasm of all the people I have worked with,” he says. “We have some brilliant businesses in this country, which makes me extremely optimistic for the future of our economy.”

The small business team at BIS has also been taking part in the “Week in Small Business” programme – 95 per cent of BIS enterprise policy officials have visited a total of 123 businesses across the country (including Brompton Bikes, Spieza Organics and Fosters Bakery) over the past nine months – but Prisk wants to encourage other ministers and officials from across Whitehall to sign up and spend between one and five days a year with SMEs or people trying to start up a business.

Prisk’s final work experience blog will be published exclusively on Real Business on Monday.
