McDonalds’ degree in finance

This just in my e-mail from the University of Glasgow’s department of economics. In the wake of the announcement that McDonalds will be offering national qualifications, this was irresistible.

REPEC (Research Papers in Economics), the body which provides a ranking of all economists in the world, shows that Ronald MacDonald, Adam Smith Professor of Political Economy, is ranked in the top 5% (at number 29) in the world in the field of International Finance.

This places the Economics Department in the top 5% in the world, ranked at number 40, along side the Research Department of the International Monetary Fund. A number of top Ivy League departments and business schools in the USA appear in this list.

Only three other departments of economics in the UK universities enter this league – Cambridge and Warwick, which get a ranking above Glasgow, and Oxford which is below Glasgow.

MacDonald is also rated in the top 5% of all economists listed with Repec (over 15,000). Professor Farhad Noorbakhsh, Head of Economics said: “This is excellent news for us and reflects our achievements. Congratulations, in particular, to Professor MacDonald on his success in the rankings.

"Globalisation and internationalisation are buzzwords for the business and financial sector in Scotland where international financial linkages are crucially important as the on going credit crunch makes clear.

"It is therefore worth noting that world class experience and expertise in the area of International Finance is available at the University of Glasgow and Professor MacDonald is the Director of Macroeconomics, Financial Linkages and the Regions, a research programme in the Scottish Institute for Research in Economics based in the Department of Economics in the University of Glasgow."
