My employees have blown me away, so it's essential to reward hard work

It’s been a busy couple of months for me and my feet have barely touched the ground. I spent most of February and March travelling, so it’s nice to sit down and reflect on what’s been happening.
With spring now upon us, and the UK finally being graced with some good weather (for now!), I’m feeling really positive and thought I would take this time to pen down my thoughts about my CV-Library team and why it’s essential to reward hard work.
I’ve been blown away with the performance of my employees in 2017 so far. Not only are we continuing to smash records, we’re constantly thinking of new ways of doing things, saving money where we can and keeping morale high while we’re at it. It’s a winning formula and it doesn’t go unnoticed by me.
The sad thing is, too many businesses lose key members of staff because they fail to reward hard work and celebrate their employees. We work hard to ensure this isn’t the case for us, which I’ve explained below.
Reward your employees for their hard work
As a small business, we’ve traditionally partnered up with local companies to offer up discounts for our staff. Alongside this, we give back in the best way possible by ensuring all employees have a healthy work-life balance, have access to free refreshments, can leave an hour early on their birthday and more.
As we’ve grown, some of the added benefits can be difficult to manage, especially with our regional offices expanding as we speak.
That’s why, after such a successful month in January, I decided to invest in an exciting platform named Perkbox for my staff. It means that they can log onto the portal and check out the great discounts, make instant savings and gain access to a load of freebies.
We’ve never had anything like this before so it’s been pretty exciting and we make sure that we regularly communicate the benefits of using it with our staff.
Welcome feedback about your staff
Like any business owner, I like to know everything that’s going on! If one of my senior managers has received a nice piece of feedback about one of their direct reports – I want to hear it. It’s very easy to lose touch with the day-to-day, and to forget that we wouldn’t be able to achieve our success without the dedication of every single employee – of all levels.
I ensure that that my directors pass on any positive feedback as it’s nice to hear how people are getting on. If I feel it’s appropriate, I can then drop the individual a note to say well done to reward hard work.
Another way that we celebrate success at CV-Library is through “team members of the month”. Each calendar month, we will reward hard work of a member of every department.
We’ll promote this in our internal newsletter and it’s a nice way to flag when someone has worked particularly hard or done something really impressive. Obviously you have to be careful as not to create any resentment, but it’s all done fairly and we actively encourage staff to recommend their colleagues to us.
It goes without saying that rewarding your employees is important but many businesses seem to go one way or the other: lavish, extravagant perks, versus nothing at all!
I truly feel like we’ve now got the balance right and this is resulting in a happy, exciting working environment, one where employees actually enjoy coming in to work.
It can’t always be a priority, of course, but taking small steps is important. So that’s my thoughts for this month, let’s hope the sun stays shining for us!
