We later highlighted the cluster of impressive security-related businesses that were developing in the UK; others being Sophos and Actinic. Former Real Business columnist and FT correspondent Richard Gourlay became a non-executive in the Cambridge firm. It’s not been an easy ride for the pony-tailed brothers. A previous bid by US firm Safenet, which was blocked by the competition authorities, had valued nCipher at close to £100m. And the van Somerens stepped from their executive duties last year.
