nCipher entrepreneurs to sell out

Real Business first spotted nCipher in the year of its establishment, featuring it in our first ever "50 to Watch". We later highlighted the cluster of impressive security-related businesses that were developing in the UK; others being Sophos and Actinic. Former Real Business columnist and FT correspondent Richard Gourlay became a non-executive in the Cambridge firm.

It’s not been an easy ride for the pony-tailed brothers. A previous bid by US firm Safenet, which was blocked by the competition authorities, had valued nCipher at close to £100m. And the van Somerens stepped from their executive duties last year.

Still, they should be patting themselves on the back for a job well done over many years.
