Start the day feeling strangely confused and disorientated. Home computer crashed over weekend so was unable to potter around on Sunday and plan out my week in normal fashion.
Arrive at work with little or no conception about what I am supposed to be doing! Several groups of next year’s designs are now underway and just need tweaking as we go along. We are reluctant to start too many more until these are perfected as may cause design overload on the brain, so have decided to run parallel week of staff assessments. Spend day with Second-in-Charge, deciphering line managers’ notes on their staff so that we are fully prepared to do ten appraisals over course of next two to three days. Latest staff rumour is that a furniture company is moving into town and offering 50 per cent more wages than us. Know it is hugely unlikely to be true but cannot help gut reaction of bad temper when hear how staff are pricking up ears. Sharp reminder that keeping people in work during recession will clearly bring no loyalty.
