Name: Paul AlexanderAge: 39 Company: Data analytics firm Beyond Analysis Turnover: £5.6m First job: Photographic assistant, working for British Coal and taking photos of coal faces. Dream job: My current role, CEO of Beyond Analysis. Car: Range Rover Sport. Economy, business or first class: All three; it just depends on the occasion. Most extravagant purchase: The one I’m just about to make for a SONOS wireless hi-fi system. Most-played song on your iPod: Going Home by Dire Straits (the theme from the movie Local Hero). Best business book: Bear Grylls’ biography Mud, Sweat and Tears. The parallels between climbing a mountain and starting a business are simply astonishing. Worst business moment: I’m struggling to think of one in particular. There have been some bad events but, looking back, I wouldn’t single any one out as the worst. They all add up to make me the person I am now, and I’ve learned some things which will make me a better leader in the future. Proudest business moment: Visa Europe investing in the business. There’s no better indication that all of the hard work we put in is worth it and that we have been doing something right. Your business mentor: My dad, Bill. He has gone from being a miner in the north-east to chairman and CEO of multinationals. If I can be half as successful in my lifetime, it would be an awesome achievement. Next big thing: Mobile, mobile, mobile.
