Name: Paul Yates

Age: 35

Company: I set up Just Search in 2004 and sold it four years later. I started Online Ventures earlier this year – an umbrella corporation for four Manchester-based digital businesses. Each business within the group covers a different sector. Rococo is an established PR/marketing agency that deals with everything from branding to event management; Search Innovation specialises in SEO; Via Studios is a leading multi-discipline web design and development studio; and Mobedia is a digital agency.

Turnover: The turnover of Online Ventures is £1.5m. I plan to float it on the stock market by 2013.

First job: Telesales

Dream job: Racing car driver

Car: Range Rover

Economy, business or first class: Business

Most extravagant purchase: My holiday home in Majorca.

Most-played song on your iPod: “Real Love” by Driza Bone.

Best business book: Anyone can do it: My story by Duncan Bannatyne.

Worst business moment: When I returned from my honeymoon to find out that most of my 14 employees had left to set up a direct competitor. It was devastating.

Proudest business moment: My proudest moment was selling my first company Just Search for £14.8m after only three years.

Your business mentor: I don’t have one.

Next big thing: A blurring of the line between social media and SEO.
