Seven tips for dealing with workplace stress

1 Mins

Get active

Physical activity can cleanse the mind and calm you down, so go for a run or even just get up and stretch. While this won’t clear your stress completely it can help you to identify the cause and take actions to deal with it.

Don’t turn to chemical relief

Relying on caffeine, alcohol or cigarettes will just prolong the problem and cause more stress down the line.

Get plenty of sleep

We all know most adults need 7-8 hours of sleep per night but plenty of us ignore this advice. It’s also important to keep things regular – erratic sleeping hours aren’t good for stress.

Focus on working smart, not working long

Accept that there simply isn’t enough time in the day to do absolutely everything you could do. Focus on prioritising the most important tasks rather than doing absolutely everything under the sun.

Have some time to yourself…

Taking time out to breathe, think and relax will help to release pent up stress and worries.

…but be social

Talking things through with someone you can trust can help you get to the bottom of your stress.

Eat properly

Don’t skip meals, avoid high-sugar food and drinks and opt for complex carbohydrates like pasta and potatoes. Keep lunch light to avoid an afternoon slow-down.
