Crowdfunding: a new way of doing things
Sebastion Lewis was a stock broker before he made the jump online easier for sole traders by creating GetSiteTracked.com Ltd, known as the first company dedicated to the British sole trader.
The company started when Sebastian’s father, like many sole traders, was finding it difficult to adapt to using the internet to source new business. Web hosting providers offer services that are usually so complex and expensive, the majority of sole traders can’t create a website for their business.
Sebastian created a website commited to getting sole traders and SMEs on the web quickly and simply. GetSiteTracked.com, later renamed to SoleTraderWebsites.com, is now the UK’s leading low cost website provider for sole traders and small business owners.
But before that there was the funding barrier. When starting out, Sebastian was searching for an alternative to bank loans and came across crowdfunding. In March 2012, the business received £100,000 of crowdfunding in 12 days, from 29 investors via Crowdcube.Com. The deal was made in exchange for 33 per cent of his business.
