Judging day is now behind us, making the awards night that much closer. While 18 awards are up for offer at the 2018 Amazon Growing Business Awards, two revolve around small businesses, separated into different turnover brackets – from up to £10m and between £10m-£25m. It’s the latter we take a closer look at, with a little help from the teams aboard the shortlisted companies. Here are the eight finalists.

Growth story: Commencing as a single standalone site, built by two entrepreneurs with a wealth of experience in the craft beer market, Brewhouse & Kitchen has continued to increase its turnover, growing from £5.3m to over £18.5m within 2 years.

Growth story: Golden Leaves is one of the UK’s leading providers of Funeral Plans, having successfully grown at four-times the rate of the market share over the last five years alone.

An online booking platform making it easier than ever for customers to find a great cleaner in their areaGrowth story: Since launching, Housekeep has grown year-on-year and is on track to double last year’s turnover. Starting in 2014 with one cleaner and £5,000, the business has since scaled to a team of 30+, providing over a million hours of cleaning for customers all across London.
“With our innovative, in-house technology, we have optimised cleaner scheduling and routing, significantly reducing their travel times and costs. In all, we have saved our cleaners over £1.2m in travel costs, meaning cleaners earn more with Housekeep than they would elsewhere.”
Growth story: Founded in 1980, Key Travel (KT) has grown rapidly over the last five years to become the world’s largest international travel management company exclusively serving the faith, humanitarian and education sectors. The business has around 1,900 clients in 54 countries, served by over 300 employees in the UK, US and Europe, registering £17.8m turnover in 2017.

Connecting SMEs with energy suppliers.Growth story: Founded in 2007, Love Energy Savings (LES) specialises in comparing business electricity and gas prices. The business employs 281 staff and supports over 44,000 customers nationwide, and is the UK’s second highest rated company for work-life balance on Glassdoor. LES secured £25m investment in August 2018 to accelerate growth.
The UK’s leading advisory business in organisation design.Growth story: Q5 is a British startup that has successfully gone global since launching in London in 2009. Approaching its 10th year, the business trades internationally through offices in New York, Sydney and Hong Kong. Q5 is on course to deliver a turnover of £23m in 2019.

Growth story: Schoolblazer now has a 30% share of independent schools in the UK.

With year-on-year organic revenue growth of over 35 per cent over the last five years, recent recognition of SME exports and a telecoms acquisition, LA Micro continues to go from strength-to-strength. There are plans in the future to maintain the current growth rate whilst maintaining standards and ensuring the team celebrate their success together.

Little Dish is a pioneering SME with a mission to make a positive difference in children’s nutrition. The brand started with a trial in 20 Waitrose stores in 2006, after convincing buyers that a fresh meal for toddlers – an unproven concept – was worthy of listing. Today, the range is nationally available, feeding 200,000 children each week. Looking forward, 2018 will be transformational. Having secured financial investment in September 2017, 2018 will see the launch of our first advertising campaign and our launch into America, becoming the very first brand in the US to offer chilled toddler meals.
There are several features that set Reassured apart from much of the competition. We add value by improving process efficiency, leading to customers getting cover quicker. We have implemented processes to reduce the number of days that customers wait to be underwritten and we have Internal Service Level Agreements around feeding back medical decisions to customers. We’re among the few large-scale brokers who over the last few years have operated a revenue model which includes a significant portion of business written on non-indemnity terms which sets a more stable and predictable basis for valuing and operating a commission-based business.
Telensa is a world-leading UK SME, showing explosive growth and consistently winning major contracts around the globe – in particular in the highly competitive US market. The company has been named as the global market leader in a comprehensive study of the smart street lighting market, and has shown both sustained revenue growth and product innovation, allowing it to significantly disrupt the street lighting industry. Its technology is proven at massive scale and supported by a sound business case, providing municipalities with a fully-paid wireless network onto which they can deploy Smart City services.
We are very proud of our strong organic growth record supplemented with a streamlined bolt-on process that has seen us make eight acquisitions in 18 months – and we shortly hope to complete on our ninth.
