Rumours are circulating today that Cains, the Liverpool brewer of ales such as Cains Formidable and Cains Lager, is on the brink of administration. Some 1,000 jobs are in jeopardy. Real Business spotted the up-and-coming brewer a couple of years back. Its two bosses, Sudarghara and Ajmail Dusanj, had acquired the business in 2002. Business was flying back in 2006, with Cains lager winning (unprecedentedly) awards at real-ale competitions. Then the brothers told Real Business: "We are in it for the long term. We don’t need a quick return.” Unfortunately, events have intervened. Rising costs, the smoking ban and a disputed tax bill have pushed the brewery to the edge.
