The seven biggest cybercrimes in history

Beware: emails can be the key to your bank details

2. Epsilon

While the hack into Epsilon in 2011 might not be as well known, it is one of the worst data breaches in corporate history, as well as one of the costliest – $4bn. The company provides marketing and email marketing to some of the largest organisations, seven of which appear in the top ten of the Fortune 100 list. Hackers stole the names and email addresses of millions.

And although the emails were the only thing stolen, it proved to be a very lucrative phising scam, where credible-looking emails had been sent to people soliciting other sensitive information, such as bank account details.
