In 2014, the Investec’s list of 100 fastest-growing private companies ranked Nigel Fredericks among the “forgotten army” of medium-sized businesses leading the UK’s recovery. At the same time, the poultry supplier featured on Real Business’s 2014 Hot 100, at number 97.
Having been founded in 1890 – its original location now buried beneath Wembly Stadium – managing director Nigel Tottman is adamant that the company has always been, and will remain, a family business.
He stressed that although it was never his aspiration, he was brought up in the meat industry and was made to work in the store. Tottman admitted that he “grew into it”, keeping the company in the family for the fourth generation.
During his reign, and alongside his sister, Tottman transformed the business. Instead of supplying meat to supermarkets or running a stand-alone-store as is often the preserve of butchers, the company started to sell its goods to restaurants and hotels up and down the nation.
This led to Nigel Fredericks being dubbed as a catering butcher. This innovative approach is undeniably testament to why the company jumped seven places from its previous position on the Hot 100 list.
The company also exclusively supplies demi glace from Finland, as well as vintage dry aged beef.
During the past four years, Nigel Fredericks’s revenues has grown almost 30 per cent a year.
