1 Mins

Staff finally pushed me too far late yesterday. Found a piece of furniture that had been cleared to go out deliberately damaged.

Right hand/sales manager had been kindly helping out in despatch and some little brute had chosen to carve his initials into the front of one cabinet door. Called entire staff together and told them not to bother to come in again unless culprit stepped forward. Needless to say no-one did.

After scrabbling round, talking to HR company and totally sleepless night, summoned line managers in and pointed out to them that I could easily employ high-powered outside manager to come in and sort things out this summer as come what may, I was intending to have that strange thing – a life – during next couple of months and wasn’t prepared to let my other managers alone pay the price.  Alternatively they could come on board and manage.

After some fits of nerves, all three actually came up with some good ideas about both their staff and putting their departments on a better footing. As suggested by left hand, we are going to pit departments more against each other from now on and encourage each to make their department the best of its kind. Feel I actually get through and now feeling much more positive as the line managers in turn slowly summon their staff back and energise down the line.
