I have always been happy to order in timber for someone to make a piece of their own, in their own time, so that staff benefit from trade prices. Given that we have always been pro-active in allowing this as a perk, it becomes immediately worrying to find people doing it without permission. However much innocence is protested, on the grounds that they “forgot” to ask permission. Trust is inevitably destroyed. Resort to business coach for guidance as whole incident sends me into spin of depression about the place. Following hard slap on hand, draw up new, clearer set of rules with regard “home work”. Also arrange meeting with all managers to spell out that for me trust is vital and any breach of this in future will be met with immediate dismissal.
