Virgin Media Business has launched Voom Fibre business broadband which offers speeds of up to 350Mbps, more than four times faster than its rivals. PlusNet, BT Business and Talk Talk Business all offer deals at around 76Mbps, according to USwitch. Although broadband speeds offered by all providers fluctuate month on month, figures promoted are the maximum speeds – the average speeds accessed by customers often fall short. However, Virgin Media Business believes its new Voom Fibre broadband should offer 200Mbps minimum to most customers, with many accessing the full 350Mbps. The vast majority of businesses claim that broadband is fundamental to operations, and according to Ofcom around 11 per cent of SMEs want to upgrade existing communications services or acquire new ones in the next 12 months. The main reasons businesses cited for wanting to switch communications providers were to get a better deal, or better coverage, and with Voom Fibre, businesses will have a choice of three price plans and upload speeds. In addition, there will be a number of additional services available to help each business tailor it to specific requirements. Peter Kelly, managing director of Virgin Media Business, said: “For UK small business to thrive in this evolving digital economy they should have the technical ability and capacity in place so they can focus on development and growth, we are removing a barrier and enabling them to fulfil their digital potential – offering them all the speed they need to achieve success.” “Today we are putting a huge challenge to the market to do better. Our standard speed is now more than four times faster than our competitors’ fastest broadband product and we encourage them to match us to enable and benefit small businesses and the UK economy.” According to recent research commissioned by Virgin, if the UK could fulfil its digital potential, the benefit to the UK could be more than £90bn in GDP over two years. Kelly believes that the new broadband offering is a stepping stone to helping small and medium businesses fulfil that potential. This service will be available from May 2nd 2017.
Going above and beyond
In addition, Virgin Media Business is also looking to support the UK’s small businesses beyond ultrafast broadband, by connecting like-minded peers. Its new geo-located platform will enable entrepreneurs to share, co-create and collaborate with other small businesses in the local area. Kelly said: “Entrepreneurship and endeavour requires more than a fast broadband connection. It requires ongoing support and a community of like-minded individuals to nurture and accelerate entrepreneurship into the future.”
