While some jobs roles are to expected to resist the digital onslaught, businesses have got to ask what they can do to alleviate potential redundancies for those in danger.
Which jobs are in danger of automation?
The job roles most under threat of automation are those in the sectors of administration, support services, clerical duties, sales, transportation, construction, mining, energy and production.
When it comes to jobs that require creative thought, interpersonal skills and technological know-how there is far less threat. Fields that are in the “safe” zone include computing, engineering, science ,skilled management, arts and media, law, education, healthcare and financial services positions.
How to survive the digital onslaught
When it comes to business, innovation is integral for survival. The same applies to workers. Sixty-three per cent of CEOs say that availability of skills is their primary concern as this is a main component of business growth. Transferable skills such as creativity and problem-solving are tipped to be in high demand.
Businesses need to begin to identify the strengths of team members that are under threat and consider how their existing skills can be harnessed for the benefit of the business in the future.
Entrepreneurs know that building and maintaining a skilled workforce is essential for success, with 64 per cent of CEOs saying that creating a skilled workforce is a priority for their organisation over the next three years.
By identifying skills shortages in the workplace, businesses can offer relevant training to employees now to ensure that they will continue to be a vital part of the team. Now is the time for employees to re-skill and up-skill, adapt and diversify.
Adaptation and diversification
Markets that have adaptable talent are the most efficient and productive. Despite the realisation that they need to prepare for the future to maintain a competitive edge, only 27 per cent of CEOs have actually started or completed the changes that they’re planning to make.
Not all employees are willing or able transfer or improve their skills to move to new areas. However, the Netherlands, the UK and Canada have the workforces that are the most able to adapt talent to match opportunity.
Businesses in these countries are able to encourage workers to re-skill and up-skill in order to safeguard employees and keep business competitive.
