Paving slabs that generate energy as users walk over it… that’s a stroke of genius. But does it, erm, work?
Pavegen is proving it does. The firm’s slabs store energy on board batteries in the units, provides a unique off-grid clean energy solution where solar and wind options are unviable, such as heavily urbanised locations. Westfield Shopping Centre has installed Pavegen slabs, and the firm is already exporting to Spain, Bulgaria and Greece. Naturally, this eco-energy product is green in itself – 97 per cent of the surface of each Pavegen slab is made up of recycled truck tires, making them extremely hard-wearing in a number of environments as well as environmentally friendly, with 60 per cent of the paving unit also made from other recycled materials. The brainchild of Loughborough University Industrial Design & Technology graduate Laurence Kemball-Cook, Pavegen has grown to a team of 17 staff. More than £1m has been invested so far – not a lot for a product with such commercial potential.
